The Sweet Talkers’ new single, “Mixed Signals,” came out today, March 20.
“Mixed Signals” is the first song to be released by the band since their May 2019 EP, Electric Affair. The single was supposed to be celebrated with a release show at 51st Street Speakeasy in OKC with Various Blonde and Kodos, but the show (obviously) was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Bringing the same energy as “Mr. Brightside,” “Mixed Signals” is a ballad complete with rumors, frustration, and unhelpful prods from the imagination. The song laments mixed signals and confusion within a relationship. Pairing the desperate and frustrated lyrics with dance music, the band creates a disco/psychedelic feeling of spinning in bright lights.
The song starts off uneasy; the music knocks you off balance and tosses you into the lights. Then, lyrics accusing someone of white lies set the tone for the story aspect of the song. Laced with heartache, the song progresses into a spiral of anger, over-thinking, and impulsive behavior.
